A Helpful Guide For Choosing A Toaster

by Jane Garland

It used to be a toaster was a joke in gift giving. When you opened up a new account at the bank, they'd give you one as a thank you. Brides and grooms would be inundated with several as wedding gifts, long before wedding registries were created. But the simple truth is, toasters are essential in many homes as a part of starting the day off right. They provide a way for a quick breakfast and a delicious BLT. Today the variety of toasters available is so large, choosing one is harder than before.

Toasters today come in two, four, and even one slot choices. Two slotted ones are perfect for an individual or a couple. A four slotted one would fit easily into a larger family, allowing them to produce more toast faster, with little waiting. The single slots are fairly new, the one slot is the length of the toaster and the models are longer than the normal model.

After you decide how many slots, you want to choose one that will work for what you are toasting. Mainly these are made for slices of bread, but many people enjoy a bagel in the morning. It is frustrating when a bagel gets stuck and then has to be dug out afterwards. Some models today provide larger slots just so bagels can toast easily in them.

Everyone likes their toast done differently. Some enjoy a lightly piece of toast while another wants theirs as black as possible. That is why it is important to choose a model with a variety of settings so that you can choose the light and darkness of your toast and have it just as you like it.

Generally, toast pops up when it is done according to the chosen settings. In the past you could always eject a piece of toast before it was done by simply lifting the lever that lowers the bread. Today it is a bit harder, as most models lock the lever and the toast only pops up when considered done. If you are the type who can't wait sometimes, choosing a model with a button that ejects the toast when you want would give you control.

Many people don't think about this, but a crumb tray is important. Without a crumb tray, all those bread crumbs that are impossible to avoid when toasting will be all over the counter or surface you have it placed on. A good crumb tray is one that is easy to remove and put back, as well as easy to empty and wash if necessary.

Because toasters are a major part of many kitchens, people want them to match their decor. They used to only come in shiny metal, they looked nice when kept clean, but they didn't go with every kitchen's decor. Today you can find toasters in a variety of colors, even pink, to match the color scheme of your kitchen easily.

Choosing a toaster is an important decision for some families and selecting the right one is essential to their morning routine. The large variety of toasters on the market today make it easy to find the perfect color, amount of slots, and the design you need. Some even come with added features like defrost, racks on top for thick pieces of bread, and even a fancy one to fry an egg and warm ham as your bread is toasting for a perfect breakfast.
