Ingesting Moderate Amounts Of Red Wine Promotes Good Health

Well, the latest research is encouraging for those of us who find joy and perhaps even contentment in having a couple of glasses of red wine with dinner, or later, sitting in front of the fireplace contemplating the day, the glass of cabernet in your hand catching the firelight. And now there's more to think about as you sip away, like what a great way this is to benefit your health!

Through the ions of time, wine has been utilized as a medical application. Labour pains and a topical antiseptic are a couple of many uses used over time. With the advances in modern science we are now discovering many more health attributes in wine.

In the fight against cancer - Red wine contains resveratrol, a naturally occurring anti-fungicide found in the skins of red grapes. This acts as an antioxidant in the body, suppressing free radicals and thereby reducing the aging and potentially cancer-causing damage to DNA cells. Drinking a moderate amount of red wine has been shown to reduce the incidence of both lung and prostate cancer. In fact, drinking a glass of red wine a day may cut a man's risk of prostate cancer in half.

Heart health - In experiments on mice and rats, resveratrol has been shown to decrease plaque formation in the arteries and also to decrease the incidence of blood clots. This could be the explanation for the "French Paradox", ie the low death rate from heart problems among the French even though their diet is traditionally rich in fat. It is thought the red wine they habitually drink with their meals might provide the answer.

Losing Weight- Mice again get the Reveratrol jab and this time it is discovered that resveratrol has fat fighting properties, preventing pre-fat cells from maturing. The research is on-going so don't start ordering three pizzas and a bottle of red vino just yet.

Diabetes - A glass of red wine a day could prevent or control diabetes. Certain ingredients in the wine seem to regulate blood sugar levels in the body. This is a controversial study and further research is needed.

Sex - The intake of red wine seems to help a women's libido. If studies are to be believed, the wine assists in sexual libido possibly due to increased blood flow to the sexual organs. The study was made up of women who drank 1 or two glasses of red wine per day, those who drank alternative beverages and others who did not drink at all. Women who drank in excess of two glasses of alcohol were not tested as their non-sober state may cause increased sexual activity. It turns out that the women who drank two glasses of red wine each day were top of the charts when it came to sexual activity.

Red grape skins have melatonin in them. This is a sleep hormone that our body uses to prompt us to go to sleep. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvinon and Chianit wines are best for this effect.

The Common Cold- Keep away the dreads of the common cold with a moderate intake of wine. Research has shown that the flavonoids of red wine carry with them anti-viral properties or anti-inflammatory aspects in the wine will keep that cold at bay.

Cholesterol - Another group of chemicals in red wine called saponins are thought to lower cholesterol. These are believed to block the absorption of cholesterol by binding to it. Follow-up studies are being undertaken.

The Brain - Scientists, in an experiment performed on rats, have discovered that any large quantities with daily intakes of red wine does not damage the brain, unlike other alcoholic beverages. The antioxidants in the wine are believed to protect the brain from alcohols damaging effects. This is not to suggest that one should consume any large quantities of wine but does confirm the value of the antioxidants in red wine.

A word of caution: All the above benefits come about with moderate red wine consumption. Doctors generally define moderate as a 5 ounce or 150 ml glass of wine per day for women and two glasses per day for men.

Red WineTip: As resveratrol absorption through the stomach is not that effective, it is recommended that you sip the wine slowly so that the resveratrol is absorbed through the lining of the mouth.

So, as I leave you to contemplate beside your fireplace, here's to your good sipping and good health. Cheers!
