Popular Dieting Misconceptions

by Stanley Q. Xavier

Most people are overweight today, and many would like to remedy that situation. That means there is a huge market to sell products and information to people to help them lose weight. The problem is that much of this information is contradictory. It's hard to tell which information is good, and which isn't. In this article you'll learn some of the biggest myths out there, so you can lose the weight you want without wasting any time with ideas that simply don't work.

The first major myth, that is taking quite a long time to die, is that all fats are bad. For a while, "fat free" was the best thing you could put on a product to make it sell. The problem is that there are two kinds of fats. Good fats, which lower dangerous cholesterol and are great sources of energy, and bad fats, which are incredibly hard to burn as energy, and do nothing but clog up your arteries. Good fats are unsaturated fats, found in olive oil, nuts, and fish. Bad fats are saturated fats found in meat and most other oils.

Another myth is that you can't lose weight by doing strength conditioning. Many people are under the assumption that the only way to get skinny is by becoming a long distance runner. The truth is that by doing strength training, you will increase your base metabolism, which means you'll burn many more calories throughout the day.

Another common myth that has been perpetuated by many people is that you need to eat several small meals during the day to keep your metabolism high. The truth is, if you eat plenty of small meals during the day, your body will always be using your food intake as energy, and it will never switch over to burning body fat. When you eat three meals only, without snacking, you'll give your body sufficient time to switch over into fat burning mode.

Unfortunately, the biggest myth is one that we'd love to believe the most. And that is that you can lose weight quickly. Every pound of fat on your body is worth 3500 calories. So if you starved yourself, and didn't eat anything, you might lose a pound of fat every two or three days. That would seriously mess your system up, and you'd end up in the hospital. On the other hand, you could spend about six hours a day on the stationary bike. That way you'd lose a pound a day. That is just as unlikely. The cold hard truth is that it takes time to gain wait and it takes time to lose weight. Don't waste any time, money or energy on quick fixes.

Losing weight is really not that difficult when you understand what works and what doesn't. Get plenty of exercise, eat three healthy meals per day, and give yourself plenty of time. When you stick to the basics, you will have no problems.
