When it comes to planning parties, one of the biggest expenses is food. But there are several steps you can take in order to cut your party food costs. It is not necessary to purchase expensive appetizers and beverages to throw a great party. A little imagination and effort can make your party a memorable occasion.

Follow these suggestions if you want to save money the next time you throw a party.

Potluck

A potluck is certainly cheaper than hiring a caterer and you will save a lot of time and money by having your guests prepare a dish to share with others. You'll end up with an interesting assortment of foods with potluck. To make things simpler, include a suggestion as to what type of dish you would like your guests to bring such as a dessert, vegetable, or salad.

Finger foods are fun

You don't need to bring out your best china with dips, chips, and small sandwiches because you can put them on vegetable trays and they're relatively inexpensive. Simply supply napkins and small paper plates and allow your guests to serve themselves from an assortment of bite size goodies.

Back to basics

Fruit and cheese don't require fancy plate settings or dishes which is why they make excellent choices for casual party foods. Buy fresh fruit in season when you are likely to find certain varieties on sale and fill your table will a variety of cheeses, crackers, and perhaps olives and nuts.

Try Italian

Spaghetti with salad and garlic bread is a good choice for a dinner party where finger foods are not appropriate or you can have pizza delivered. You can find a bargain on different types of pizza and you'll also save time.

You can use two-liter soft drinks and bottled water for party beverages because they're inexpensive. Provide ice and cups and allow your guests to serve themselves. Tea and coffee are cheap as is lemonade that you make fresh or from concentrate.

Even if you didn't spend a lot of money on your party, it can still be a success. Look for sales on the foods and beverages you choose and plan ahead so you will have time to shop around be fore you buy.
