With the state of the economy as it is now, it can be a challenge just to get through a day. While the food stamps program has undergone a facelift of sorts by transitioning to the SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) and phasing out the use of actual food stamps, the newer method is much more accessible with the use of the EBT card, or the Electronic Benefits Transfer card. It functions almost in the same manner as a debit card and can be used to purchase food from your local food retailers, with benefits being reloaded periodically.

Although the EBT card is somewhat more convenient, there are restrictions that can prevent people from making purchases online with just any retailer. Mostly this is because of the government's policies regarding EBT card usage, but is also because of many retailer's online policies. Of course, if you know what to do, it is still possible to use these benefits for online purchases. First, call the grocery or other retailer and inform them of your intention to purchase food using their online service using your EBT card. Keep in mind that you will be responsible for any extra preparation of delivery fees that would be imposed on top of the food's actual cost. These fees will have to be paid for separately using cash, or any other method of payment.

You will still have to personally present your card for the transaction to be processed to buy food online with food stamps. This can be done either upon pick up of the food or upon delivery. Some stores do allow this practice and post their policies for such transactions on their website. Most of them would follow this kind of procedure through.

While EBT cards were designed to be used during personal transactions, commonly known as card-present transactions in the credit card world, there will always be those situations where it would be difficult to go to a store in person to pay for purchases.

Underprivileged individuals can sometimes be injured or disabled, with their place of residence near the outskirts of town where there is hardly any access to public transportation, or even a friend who owns a car. This is why the option to have the food delivered after purchasing them online is much more convenient, allowing people to take advantage of their benefits at times when it would otherwise be difficult to do so.
